Audi Q7 Review

Audi Q7 2020

As a mid-size luxury SUV,

the Audi Q7 faces some truly capable rivals like the BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. However, the seven-seater crossover stands firm against these leading brands with an eminently capable and newly developed turbocharged V6 engine that develops 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, even more than in previous years, and a step over base 2.0-liter turbo. The largest powertrain is combined with excellent driving dynamics, a luxurious interior and a velvety suspension to deliver driving that few can hope to match. In the new year some additional features are added to the already well-equipped Q7 to help it stay competitive in the luxury segment. The less impressive four-cylinder turbo engine returns in 2020, if only later in the year of production, but it's likely to remain an unpopular choice.

Q7 Gas mileage

While the V6 engine has seen an update for the new year, the turbocharged four-cylinder carries over. However, Audi has not given mileage estimates for the four-cylinder in the updated and heavier 2020 Q7, but we don't expect it to change much from last year's 19/25/21 mpg in city / highway / combined cycles. The turbocharged V6 used to share the same ratings, but its increased power has led to a reduction in efficiency of 17/21/18 mpg. With a 22.5-gallon tank, the Q7 can cover up to 405 miles with its V6 engine

Q7 Exterior

A makeover has helped make the relatively simple Q7 stand out a bit more this year. While the grill maintains its trapezoidal shape, it has been redesigned with vertical veins instead of traditional horizontal ones to offer a much more assertive and eye-catching look. The front bumper has been remodeled to accommodate the new aggressive headlight design. Similarly, the taillights have been redesigned to match the new tailgate with its horizontal chrome strip. All models feature a panoramic sunroof and the bottom trims come with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, while the top trims fitted with the V6 engine get the largest 20-inch alloys.

Dimensions

While some seven-seater crossovers manage to maintain modest proportions, the Q7 is not such. A 118-inch wheelbase is found within a 199.3-inch long body. And while it may be great for fitting kids, your friends, and your friends' dog, the SUV isn't quite as practical for a busy school parking lot 77.6 inches wide, excluding the side mirrors. At 68.5 inches tall, the Audi offers great visibility on the road even for grandma. However, you may not feel too safe behind the wheel of a car that weighs between 4,784 and 5,082 pounds. This is on par with similar luxury SUVs like the BMW X5 with a weight range of 4,758 to 5,260 pounds, while the Volvo XC90 is slightly lighter at 4,327 pounds.

Q7 Performance

The Audi Q7 has always had great performance, but this year it is even more capable with its stronger turbocharged V6 engine. Sadly, the four-cylinder engine remains unchanged, with the same lethargic sprint time of 6.9 seconds at 0-60 mph. It's not horrible, but it's not exactly exciting either. Standard all-wheel drive helps make the SUV feel a little more capable, but you're unlikely to be impressed by the four-cylinder powertrain, especially when the Q7 is fully loaded.

With six additional horsepower and 44 pound-feet of torque over the previous V6, the new turbocharged V6 engine makes the Q7 perform even better than in the past. It may be electronically limited to 130 mph, but the V6 is much faster, sprinting from 0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. It is also much stronger, towing up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. This is 500 pounds more than the BMW X5 in its more capable appearance.

Engine and transmission

The standard engine of the Audi Q7 is the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from previous years, delivering 248 hp and 273 pound-feet to all four wheels. This engine has remained unchanged since 2019, and will likely be as unpopular as it was then. You can move the bulky SUV, but it detracts from the sporty appeal of the Q7's excellent handling.

The current standard engine is the new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that develops a higher 335 hp and 369 lb-ft. It comes mated to the same refined eight-speed automatic gearbox as the four-cylinder, which shifts smoothly and never struggles to find the right gear for the situation. The stronger motor is much more capable of moving

Features

The Audi Q7 is not lacking in features, both standard and available. The entry-level Premium is equipped with three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, eight-position heated electric front seats, a tilt and telescopic steering column, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise and keyless entry and ignition. Also the base model now comes with Audi's 12.3-inch LCD virtual cockpit, though the front display is reserved for the Prestige. Standard safety features include front and rear sonar, lane departure warning, rear view camera, and front collision avoidance. The Premium Plus adds Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Vehicle Exit Warning and a Surround View Camera. In addition to the front display, the Prestige also comes with electric soft-closing doors, four-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, emergency assistance, active lane assistance, intersection assistance, traffic jam assistance and recognition of traffic signals.
