Overview
Unlike some rival sedans, which compromise luxury for performance and vice versa, the 2020 Volvo S60 balances both qualities beautifully. Its distinctive yet elegant exterior is offset by an inviting interior that is sophisticated and spacious. Its array of desirable features cover the gamut from high-class to high-tech. Likewise, the Swedish automaker has not neglected its pencant for safety with innumerable standard and optional driver-assisted technology. The Volvo sedan also offers three different powertrain options, including a powerful plug-in-hybrid version that also powers its Sport model. Despite this, every 2020 S60 is rewarding to drive and ride comfortably.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The base S60 T5 has a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the front wheel; The T6 variant has standard all-wheel drive and additionally has 66 horsepower etiquette of the supercharger. Power on the all-wheel-drive T8 plug-in hybrid adds up to 400 horsepower, and the top-of-the-line T8 Polestar Engineered is also sportier. Its plug-in-hybrid powertrain makes 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque and features all-wheel drive. With adaptive dampers and exclusive 19-inch wheels, the Polestar version is available as part of a care by the Volvo membership scheme as a whole. During the first drive of the high-spec S60 trim levels, we were extremely impressed with how well they handled. The steering proved quick and accurate with clogged roads, and a notable amount of cornering grip. Similarly, both the 316-hp T6 model and the powerful Polstar engineer were effectively quick and responsive.
Range, Charging and Battery Life
The 2020 S60 T8 plug-in hybrid has an 11.6-kWh battery pack that offers an all-electric driving range of 22 miles. Although its battery is larger than the previous model year, it does not lead to a longer driving range. The T8 can also be charged at home or charging stations.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
The 2020 S60 has three different EPA ratings that coincide with its different powertrain configurations. The front-drive T5 model is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The more powerful, all-wheel-drive T6 versions go 21 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The T8 plug-in hybrid is expected to earn 28 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. We have only tested the front-drive T5 and all-wheel-drive T6 models on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, where they earned 37 mpg and 31 mpg respectively.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Volvo showcases its stunning build quality inside the S60, showcasing fully upscale materials and an unusual attention to detail. The design is undeniably forward thinking and thrives with jeweler switchgear and extremely comfortable seats. Its deluxe features include a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, head-up display, massaging the front seats, and more. Not only are front-seat passengers comfortable and equipped with supportive buckets, the rear-seat occupants will appreciate its generous legroom and headroom. The internal cubic space is highlighted by useful door pockets and a center console that boasts a tray with a retractable cover and a handy bin under the armrest. We also managed to fit five carry-on suitcases in the trunk of the S60, one more than the Jaguar XE, but less than the BMW 3-Series.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Each 2020 S60 features a tablet-style censure infotainment system that looks stylish but can be frustrating to operate. This is because some of its touch-sensitive icons are difficult to choose, and some may be distracting to use functions such as climate control. Otherwise, the system benefits from a larger amount of knob and a useful home button. Each model has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard, but a Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system is also available.
