Maruti Suzuki Swift 2020
Maruti Suzuki Swift Engine & Performance
The new Swift comes with both petrol as well as diesel options. But with the announcement of Suzuki exiting the diesel engine market in 2020, there is much doubt about purchasing the diesel version. Nevertheless, both engines come with excellent instability and you cannot go wrong. We also believe that Suzuki will continue to manufacture parts of the diesel motor and support its after-sales service. Therefore, it seems like a great time to buy one of the last few diesel motors that will run out of Suzuki's stable. Maruti Suzuki thought a little ahead about the future and launched the Swift with BS6 compliant engine in July 2019.
1.2 L VVT Petrol Engine
The Swift Petrol is powered by a 1.2-liter, 4-cylinder K12 petrol engine that operates on many other Maruti cars, as well as the outgoing models of the Baleno, Dzire and even the Swift. It emits 82 bp of power at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm of peak torque at 4200 rpm. Due to Swift's light curb load, Suzuki has separated the motor by a slight margin in favor of greater fuel efficiency. This engine definitely feels faster in the new Swift due to its increased weight. Suzuki has propelled the engine towards the city's versatility and has given it enough low-end grunt to crawl in traffic. Therefore, you will not be forced to extreme fluctuations within city conditions. This engine is quite reversible and the power distribution seems very linear.
Once on the open highway, you will be able to get the best out of this motor. Once past the 2500 rpm mark, this motor feels quite lively up to the redline. The engine throws a mellow note before 4000 rpm and enthusiasts will like it to be high-revealing. Throttle response through the rev band remains sharp, but the rewimmer kicks in at 6300 rpm which will force you to specifically upshift while overtaking. The 5-speed gearbox is sleek shifting with short throws and is towards the clutch lighter making it easier for city traffic. This motor has been doing its duty for the last ten years and it is a jewel of a motor especially for urban traffic. If you want an ultimate city crawler, you can go with an AMT gearbox, which is smooth but slow with upshifting. The overall performance of this engine is simply one of the best in its segment and most customers will not have much to complain about.
1.2L DDIS Engine
The 1.2L DDIS engine on the Swift is sometimes referred to as India's national engine due to its widespread use in many cars. It is also the last generation of the 1.2L DDIS motor that Suzuki will be selling in India. It is a turbocharged 3 cylinder motor that pushes 74 bp of power at 4000 rpm and 190 Nm of peak torque at 2000 rpm. Due to the lower weight of the current generation model, this engine also feels more fast to drive than the outgoing model. Once you move, the Swift closes the line in a linear manner, but the lower RPF has a slight turbo lag. In most situations, enough torque is available and you don't have to go down very often. But, things change when you want to close the gap quickly.
The turbo kicks past 2000 rpm and things get better as the speed increases. The level of NVH inside the cabin is not the best and you can hear the diesel clatter almost continuously. On the highways, the Diesel Swift is quick, but not what you'd call exciting. Therefore, where the petrol engine in the Swift is impressive, the diesel motor seems adequate. The AMT with the diesel motor is slower with its upshift and the throttle response is also sluggish compared to the petrol motor.
Maruti Suzuki Swift - Ride Quality & Handling
The Swift has always been associated with sporty driving dynamics and has similar shows in its ride and handling sets. The suspension of the Swift is tuned to the stiffer side which is fun to drive but takes some comfort away. At slow city speeds, the suspension is not able to soak into every bump or pit like its big brother, the Baleno. But the suspension is livable for the most part and the ride gets better as you increase speed. The stiffer suspension ensures that the body roll is very well contained and you can have some fun around the corners. On the highway, the Swift does not feel nervous and clings well to the tarmac. Therefore, highway ride is definitely better than city ride. The Swift is a one-finger light at parking and city speeds thanks to its light steering unit. This makes it a much easier car to drive in urban conditions, but an enthusiast would not like. The steering is fairly direct and the car should point in the direction it needs to. On the highway, the steering gains some weight but still stays on the lighter side. A turn of 4.8 meters also makes the radius a U-turn, which is a scary case. While the new Swift has a sporty side suspension in handling, the focus is more on comfort.
Maruti Suzuki Swift's braking performance
A strong braking performance not only gives you confidence when driving at high speeds, but also makes the car safer to drive. Like the old car, the new Swift has front brakes and rear drum brakes. However, the braking performance in the new car is much better. It comes as standard with ABS and EBD and ABS is not intrusive in nature. Under hard braking, the car stops in a straight line with no play. The brake pedal feels full of feedback and the brakes perform competently.
The best braking performance is provided by Ford's Freestyle which comes at speeds of 100–0 kmph in just 41 meters. Although the Swift's 100–0kph distance is not available, it performs par for the segment due to its light curb weight. The traiber falls under a safe braking distance, but the braking distance can increase significantly with 7 people on board.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Fuel Mileage
Suzuki cars are known to offer the best mileage in their respective regions and the new Swift comes with the same pedigree. Swift beats all its rivals with both mileage, petrol as well as its diesel engine. The diesel gives a superb mileage of 28.4 kmpl while the petrol returns 22kmpl of total fuel economy.
Infotainment System and Connectivity Options
The infotainment system is one of the most important parts of the in-car experience. It comes with a simple interface that is also Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatible. The system feels quick and sensitive but picks up some brightness under direct sunlight. It comes with 4 speakers that perform seamlessly and are tuned towards bass-heavy audiophiles. The new Swift does not come with any connected car feature which is also true for all its rivals.
