Lexus UX 2020 Review

Engine, Transmission and Performance

The 2019 UX we tested required a long 8.6 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph, and the engine seemed unrefined at high speed. While the 2019 UX250h hybrid version we tested made 181 horsepower, it had equally uncompetitive acceleration. Thankfully, they both had a lot of steering feel and quiet refinement, which are sufficiently dear to help make up for their shortages. An F Sport package brings sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels on run-flat tires, and performance-oriented upgrades such as exclusive interior and exterior appointments.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

With an EPA-estimated 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, the hybridized UX is better at saving fuel while driving around the city. We tested both versions on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test route to see how they perform in the real world. The UX200 earned 35 mpg highway, while the UX250h earned just 31 mpg, both lower than advertised.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Lexus ensures that passengers know it is a luxury vehicle thanks to an attractive layout and posh materials. It also boasts a set of standard features including dual-zone climate control and power-adjustable front seats. The experience can be enhanced with options such as heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display and snazier material. While the rear seat is far from spacious, it is also not as tight as one might expect. Unfortunately, the cargo area behind those seats is very small and is also smaller on hybrid models. We regularly managed to fit four carry-on suitcases on the UX, but we managed three additional carry-ons on the rear of the BMW X1.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Each UX has a full infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and four USB ports. The smaller Lexus can also be extended with several options including a larger 10.3-inch center screen, built-in navigation, wireless charging, and an eight-speaker premium audio system. While we appreciate this amount of content, the infotainment system is often frustrating to work with with its unique touchpad controller and other illogical controls.

Safety and Driver-Support Features

2020 UX earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It was also named the Top Safety Pick + by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Each model is also equipped with standard driver-assisted technology. Key safety features include:

Standard forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking
Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
Standard lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance
